I wonder if rock critics' influence in society isn't another example of the academy's uneasy relationship with the heterosexual white male. Granted, most rock critics are themselves white men. It's hard not to observe that the arbiters of "coolness" have held heterosexual white men in progressively lower esteem over the last 25 to 30 years. Today, I'd argue, there isn't so much an active exclusion of heterosexual white males so much as a perception that we are irrelevant.
