I'm in Oconomowoc for a semi-impromptu mini-staycation and have to say that I think this is, all around, perhaps the nicest place I've ever been to. It was a trip to Shawano (too far) that became a trip to Lake Geneva (too expensive) that became a trip to Oconomowoc (just right). I took a walk around tonight and breathed what may be the most delicious fresh air I've ever breathed. It was like a giant scented candle was burning outside.
I'd gotten a room at the Olympia Hotel and Resort a night or two ago for about $110. It turned to be a ginormous room for my standards, and the complex seems oddly empty. The service at check-in was friendly and the place doesn't have any liabilities to speak of other than being a tad dated. (Oddly, they seem to ascribe to the Mike Miller school of interior decoration--this must be the only hotel I've been to that had no art on the walls, just a mirror.) If there's a punchline, like that the place is owned by some way scary cult, I don't want to know about it tonight.
