I don't know why I feel obliged to add this disclaimer to my earlier post, but--just kidding! Though I have to admit I kind of looked at the map and thought, "Hmmm...". So I guess I must not be too old yet. The main reason for the "just kidding"--which would be my answer to embarking on even the first 20 miles of the 1,712-mile journey--is the fact that the midday sun down here is so intense, it seems like it should have some kind of accompanying sound effect or something. When you go from shade to sun, you can almost hear the "nnnnnNNNNNNGGGGG". But no complaining: I came down here for sun, and I got it! I'll be back in late February, and I will need to wear a brimmed hat of some kind then. I think I'll need the several weeks to think of which type of hat will look least ridiculous (some level of ridiculous is pretty much a given when it comes to me and fashion). I thought of a cowboy hat--after all, these conditions are what cowboy hats were designed for--but am not sure I could handle the inevitable Brokeback Mountain comments.
