I'm doing things a little bass-ackwards today. Rather than parking in Mequon and walking to Cedarburg, I've driven to C-burg and will (hopefully, cold permitting) walk to Mequon a little later.
I stopped to buy gas at the Mobil on N. Green Bay Rd. and W. Good Hope Rd. I was a little amused to see a real American flag (i.e. not just a party-store version) hanging on the wall. Pardon the cynicism, but I think something is being communicated here other than (or in addition to) the owner's patriotism. The gas station in my old neighborhood on 35th and Oklahoma--also a Mobil, I think--had an Uncle Sam figure standing outside the store. I think people to whom such jingoistic imagery appeals need to look a bit further down the petroleum supply chain.
If you're so appalled by a Middle Eastern or Asian retailing gasoline and making a few pennies per gallon, who do you think is digging up the oil in the first place--and making a fortune in the process? Of course, I think the only real solution is to get over racism. In the immortal words of Karen Walker: "There are two things I won't tolerate in this house, racism and constipation!"
